Edvi Illés – taste the blend of Badacsony
Have you heard of Edvi Illés Badacsony? If not, it is not your fault. The small, family winery is relatively new, they planted their first vines 10 years ago. All their plantations are bush wines, respecting the traditions, what is more, they are cultivated in organic way. At the 5th edition of Winelovers Wine Awards, Edvi Illés Badacsony have been awarded not less, but 7 medals! 2 of them are gold, and 5 of them are silver medals. If you taste them all, you will get a good lesson of Badacsony region, through the varietal wines made of indigenous grapes: Rózsakő, Kéknyelű, Vulcanus, Zeus. And do not miss the gold winner Bal'Art 2023, the blend of Badacsony! Bal'Art refers to Balaton and Art (Badacsony is on the north shore of Lake Balaton), and it is blend of Rajnai Rizling, Olaszrizling, Furmint, Vulcanus, Rózsakő and Budai Zöld. The wine was aged in oak barrel for 6 months, altogether 5900 bottles were made, and the retail price is 5900 HUF (around 16 EUR).

Ikon – a true "icon" indeed
Let us go to the other side of Lake Balaton: Ikon Winery (photo below) is located on the south shore of the lake. It is a different scale estate compared to Edvi Illés, Ikon owns 39 hectares and have been producing approximately 350 000 bottles since 2007 (they also purchase some grape). Ikon Winery has been awarded the Winery of the Year in 2013. They produce trustworthy, easy-drinking wines along with some outstanding premium wines. At the 5th edition of Winelovers Wine Awards, the estate has collected not less, but 4 gold medals, plus a silver medal. Ikon Tulipán red wine received exactly the same scores (90 points) for two vintages: 2021 and 2022 – that's what we call stabile quality? The Ikon wine with the highest scores (92 points) is Ikon Genezis 2022, a Bordeaux blend with 6 months of barrel ageing. And it costs only 3900 HUF! (About 11 EUR.)

Chateau Dereszla – heavy rain of medals
The first written records of Dereszla Winery are dated back to as early as 1406, since Dereszla belonged to the Hungarian king’s court in the 15th and 16th century. Chateau Dereszla winery was founded in the 18th century. Due to investments after the year 2000, the entire technical background has been renewed. At the 5th edition Winelovers Wine Awards they have collected 15 medals! This is an outstanding achievement with 1 grand gold, 3 gold medals, 9 silver medals and 2 bronze medals. To win gold with a Tokaji Aszú is quite natural, the grand gold winner is a 6 puttonyos Tokaji Aszú from 2019. However, Dereszla got gold medal for the bottle fermented sparkling Dereszla Vintage 2022 as well! The retail price is only 5900 HUF (about 16 EUR), a really good price for this stunning bubbly. Also, do not miss Dereszla Kabar 2023, a silver winner, barrel aged white wine made of 100% Kabar, the lesser-known grape of Tokaj.
